| Earthquakes occur every day, but most of them are too small to be felt. Many large earthquakes, such as the 1906 quake along the San Andreas fault in California, occur along the margins of the Pacific Ocean.
The pictures to the left show some of the destruction in San Francisco following the 1906 quake. Fires raged throughout the city as gas and water mains broke. The gas fueled the fire. With water mains broken, there was not enough pressure to pump water through fire hoses to quench the flames. |
Use this program to plot the point on the earth's surface (epicenter) where an earthquake occurred, to name the tectonic plates, to plot the locations of large quakes in a single year between 1991 and 1997.
This program stores data, read in from external files, into an array for speedy access. |
